He thought back to the hot summerâs day so long ago. âMy parents were struggling, and my father had lost his job. We had to move again, as the rent wasnât paid. When I returned to the house that day my father was drunker than usual. He wanted someone to blame so he lashed out in a fit of rage. I was quick and being used to such a scenario, managed to escape the first blow. I was ready to run to the door when my father tripped, and twisted his leg. I hesitated not realising how bad the sprain was, but I ran ignoring my fatherâs cursing. When I returned later, the house was alit. I tried to run in, but the smoke was too heavy. I looked around; the flames were engulfing the back half of the house. My father was just meters away, but the massive billows of smoke were impossible to penetrate.â
âOh my, Leo thatâs tragic.â she gasped.
âI put my arm through an open passage. It was caught by an open flame which burnt my forearm. I winced as it seared my arm, and I choked on the fumes. The pain nearly made me pass out. I stumbled back outside hoping to catch a breath and go back in. My arm was throbbing with pain, and I fell on the ground suffering from the fume inhalation. For what seemed forever, I could hear the deathly screams inside as I laid helpless outside. When the fire brigade got inside they found my father had been burnt to death. A kindly fire guard shielded my eyes from the grizzly sight.â
âHow did the fire happen?â
âThe cause was explained to me later that day. There was a faulty gas line that leaked into the house. The fire had been ignited by a cigarette left burning on the kitchen bench. My father had been a chain smoker, and a lit cigarette had fallen from the counter. He used to smoke in the house, and sometimes lit another forgetting he had one already burning. I had blamed myself ever since, if only I hadnât been so weak. I could still hear the screaming that day, and the scar was a physical reminder of my failure. Many times I dreamed of what I could have done differently.â
âItâs not your fault Leo.â
âI know..â he stammered. He got up and tried to focus his thoughts elsewhere. These memories filled him with an almost unnatural energy. He re-lived that moment over and over again, as if he was that scared child once more.
âAre you there Leo?â
He took deep measured breaths and thought of the day he had first met Trish. âYou will not go down for helping me. Donât tell anyone about our contact. Nobody.â She was the only thing in this world he had cared about, and regardless of his fate, she would be safe from the powers of the agency. He would do that right at least, and protect her.
